Popcorn 1.0: a guinea pig detector for the Raspberry Pi

We've released Popcorn 1.0 on Hugging Face: a 0.91M-parameter guinea pig detector, named after the jump a happy guinea pig does.

We distilled it from OWLv2 into a YOLOX-nano so it runs on a Raspberry Pi 5 with a Hailo-8L, at about 10 ms per 640px tile.

Scored on the compiled int8 model across 107 hand-labelled frames:

  • 70% presence recall with zero false positives (our previous YOLOv8n got 53%, p = 0.013)
  • 81% recall with one false positive in 35 empty frames

The limits: one enclosure, one camera, three animals, daylight frames only. It's a detector, not a health monitor.

ONNX and HEF weights are available under Apache-2.0 at huggingface.co/caesiasoftware/popcorn-1.0.
